Is probably the most
dreaded question for me or any other reviewer out there. I can
totally understand that this is what people like to know but the
problem is, there simply isn't a good answer!
When you ask this question
a reviewer, you usually get an answer like:
"For ME it lasts a
good … days (or hours)"
or an even more convenient
"It should (easily)
get you through the day, maybe even longer..."
Does that mean that this
also applies for YOU? No, it doesn't, NOT AT ALL!!!
What if I tell you that a
battery lasts for 2 days, you take my word for it, buy the phone only
to find out that the battery lasts YOU only a few hours? You'd be
pissed, right? That is why I usually try to avoid answering these
kind of questions.
The problem is, the
battery life or "stand by" time can vary EXTREMLY, there
are countless factors that influence the time!
Let's start with the
Of course we all know that
it heavily depends on your usage, what you do with the phone. That is
no surprise. We all know that heavy 3D gaming, etc. will drain the
battery extremely fast, no surprise there.
Of course everyone should
also know that the screen brightness has a MAJOR influence on the
battery life, reducing the screen brightness can easy double the
battery life. Features like "automatic brightness" on or
off can also make a huge difference.
There are also countless
other factors that have a HUGE influence on the battery life, some of
which some people might not be so aware of.
You need to ask yourself:
Do you have a data
connection / Bluetooth / Wifi / GPS on all the time? If so, how good
or bad are these connections? Do you have a PERFECT connection ALL
Or is your phone (for
example) "fighting" to keep a 3G / 4G / Wifi connection
"alive"? THAT can drain the battery a lot!
Do you have push
notifications activated? Are you getting SMS / MMS / Whatsapp /
e-mails or whatever notifications all the time or maybe just a few
times a day?
Do you have weather apps
installed that may try to get your (GPS) position constantly or maybe
they try to update their data once an hour, every few hours or maybe
just once a day?
And how about live
wallpapers? Yes, they look "cool" but most of them are a
real battery drainers!
One MAJOR problem are
apps, that wake up your phone constantly, everything that keeps your
phone from getting into a "deep sleep" are a KILLER for the
battery life! A lot of times people are not even aware that they
might have "deep sleep killers" running on their phones!
Another big problem for ME
to give an accurate answer about the battery life is the fact that I
USUALLY get my phones at a very "early stage", usually
there are not any firmware updates, custom firmwares, tweaks or
whatever available at the time I am testing the devices.
A firmware update can also
make a HUGE difference when it comes to the battery life! I might
test a phone with a firmware A on it, the battery life might suck,
two days later the exact same phone might be sold with a firmware B
and the battery life might be awesome now! That makes it extremely
difficult for any reviewer to make a fair assumption!
As you can see, there are
countless factors that have a huge influence on the battery life!
That is why I try to avoid this question as good as possible, the
way I experience the battery life of a phone might be COMPLETELY
different from what YOUR experience might be.
I like to answer: The
battery lasts from 2 hours to 3 days.
And you know what? That
answer isn't as wrong as you might think ;-)
