Onda Vi40 Elite Android Market Fix

Check it out:

UPDATE 01.24.2011
I was able to fix it to FULL market access, downloading paid apps will work :-)

Download: OndaVi40Marketfix

Additional drivers: 32bit and 64bit drivers

Based on this script: http://tinyurl.com/7jbzxbz

Here's a (French) instruction on how to flash the tablet plus how to apply the market fix: French instructions
Thank you so much for that :-)

Unfortunately the script did not work as it is, I had to make some changes to it. Problem was, the original script pushed a new build.prob on the device that the Vi40 can't handle, it was stuck in a "boot loop".

I removed the build.prob pushing part and tried to reduce the amount of pushed apps to a minimum. All that wasn't enough, apparently some of the pushed apps were not compatible with the Onada, I kept getting a constant error message popping up, VERY annoying :-(

So, I figured, I'd use some of the apps from a Cube U9GT2 tablet and that actually did the job :-)

One problem that remains is that the Android Market won't let you download any paid apps, only the free ones will download. That is due to the fact that I wasn't able to push the build.prob from the script on the device.

But hey, it's better than nothing, right?

UPDATE 01.27.2012 Instructions written by Francis:

Market fix instructions:

1) Download the Market fix script from here: (CLICK)

2) Decompress the loaded compressed folder. Make sure you have a decompression tool such as Winzip, Winrar or any other. Right click on the folder and select Unzip here / Decompress here / Extract here.

3) Look in the decompressed folder (vi40FullMarketFix) for the Readme (please read carefully and comply…).

4) Connect your tablet to your computer through USB

5) Start the script (the batch command) by clicking twice on the fullmarket.

6) A window command window will appear (please also check ColonelZap video) and press any character to start and complete the update process.

7) If during the execution, you get a ‘device not found’ error, it most probably means that you’ve got the wrong driver (the one in the OndaVi40Marketfix are 32bits only). I would advise you to desinstall the drivers that have been installed (BTW, I am not sure this is needed, try first without desinstalling) and load the right ones from here: (CLICK)

8) Then restart the script.

  1. Q: IS it possible to download already-paid apps from the market, or only the free ones?

For example, apps that I already paid for, using the android market on my android phone...

  2. I wish I knew! I only bought one app before, SPB Shell 3D. Normally it should show up as purchased on any other device that I use and login with my google account.

Problem with the Vi40 is, it's running on ICS, SPB Shell 3D is not yet compatible with ICS, so it won't show up in the market at all, when I look for it with the Vi40.

But of course you can always use your "old" Android device, make a backup of your paid apps, put them on a SD card and then install them on the Vi40 as you wish.

Where are they automatically downloaded in my old android device?

    2. I don't know? I always use the ES File Explorer, "manage apps", then I select whatever app I want and click on "backup". The app is then stored on my sd card in a folder called "backups".

    1. I saw the video you did with Android 4.0.3 and go launcher, but I wanted to ask if you could make a video on how to flash the android 4.0.3 on vi40.
      Should I do it?
      Last question:)
I purchased fastcardtech and must send the tablet of 8 to 11, since I noticed that you have contacts or buy from them, the tablet has arrived in stock? I purchased with EMS shipping, how long does it usually to arrive?

      Delete
    2. Maybe your tablet will come with the already 4.0.3 on it, I wouldn't worry about flashing just yet and it's really easy :-)

I can't tell you anything about if it is in stock and about shipping times, it totally depends on which country you are in and how fast things will pick up again after the national holidays in China. Right now, NOBODY is working in China, you'll have to wait until after the holidays to get some information.

  6. Hi,
Certainly this is not the right place to post to but...

I'm trying to download the firmware update for the Onda VI40 but the links from Onda are so slow that the download is cancelled after some time.

Do you know about other trusted links were I can download the firmware?

Best Regards and Thanks in advance.

    1. Do you need the V1 or V3 firmware, do you know? You should be able to find a V1 or V3 in the serial number of your tablet.

    2. I still didn't receive my VI40 but should be receiving it within next days.
For advancing some work I'm already downloading whatever I would need: applications, different launcher, OS upgrades.
So the answer is that I still don't know if I will receive V1 or V3 model but I would like to download the files in advance.
Tried to do it several times but the bandwidth from Onda site is so low that my side just stops.

      Thanks for your help.

Now when I plug it into my computer it does not show at the device manager anymore. whenever I try running it shows error throughout and quit by itself.
I cannot install anything on the tablet. When I try to install it tells me ""unfortunately file manager has stopped"

That will give you a clean start and then try my fix again. Maybe it will also help if you can uninstall the drivers on your pc and re-install them again.

  14. Dear Colonel,

I have tried to be a good soldier, I downloaded the v3 ICS 4.0.3 (the .rar file) from the Onda site and looked at the instructions....all in Chinese. Wondering why Onda does not provide any English document or explanation. Anyway, I tried an automated translation...but was really s***. Do you have or do you know any English instructions to upgrade from 4.0.1 to 4.0.3?

    1. Start the LiveSuit.exe, load the *.img file. Your tablet is off, connect it with your pc, press and hold the menu button while clicking the power button several times. That will trigger the flash software, say yes to everything and wait until the flashing is done.

Sometimes it takes several tries to get the flash software to trigger, be patient.

    2. Please be more specific. Can you include what is seen/shown on the PC desktop at every stage begining with starting the LiveSuite.exe (what comes up?)Is the *.img file the one beginning with vi40? 19. Please look at my post at 9:30 AM :-) That's how you flash a firmware. As for the market fix, to make it short:

Tablet is on, USB-Debugging is activated. Tablet MUST(!!!!) be recognized as an ADB-device by your pc. On your pc, execute the fullmarket.bat and wait for it to finish. Re-boot your tablet and that's it.

    ReplyDelete
  20. ok,quite simple, hope to make it work and with no problems after,i've seen that it could appears some kind of buggs after doing this, once again thanks and please qeep posting with new features and stuffs for us.good luck

    1. It really is quite simple, I think the biggest problem for most people is to get the ADB-drivers installed. Unfortunately I only have Vista, so I can't help anyone with Windows 7. But once the drivers are in place, it's really simple :-)

      Good luck :-)

      Delete
  21. 2 more question and i promise that is all.
1)if the tablet cames with 4.0.3 i don't need to install the firmware on the site right?and if it would be a problem with the android market fix, like the errors i've heard,i need to reflash the firmware again?i hope that i can install the adb drivers,i plug in the cable, with the usb debugging on,then i get the error because the windows can't install the drivers, and after that i browse the drivers manually right?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That is all correct :-) If your tablet comes with 4.0.3 already, you don't need to flash it. If for some reason the market fix doesn't work, you can always just flash the 4.0.3 firmware again and everything will be back to how it was in the first place.

When Windows isn't able to install the ADB-drivers, you will be given the option by windows, to select a folder where it should look for the drivers.

Or: If you see a device in your windows device manager that has a missing driver, you right click on it, "update driver" and then point it to the folder where the drivers are located.

It sounds more difficult than it really is, you'll figure it out :-)

  22. hope,if not i will try with windows xp and manually select the drivers from the beginning,it is much simple with xp i think.because i can select the drivers imediatly.once again, thanks i hope i will solve this.good luck further

  25. Hello C Zap,

Thank you for all the public work you do on these devices, it really is appreciated by everyone researching before purchasing etc.

Can I ask please, what are your thoughts regarding the Ainol Elf/Aurora vs the Onda Vi40 E please?

They are both very similar in price and it appears that you get a lot more screen real estate for the same CPU/GPU etc on the Onda. Are Ainol and Onda similar for support from the company and communities etc...

Which would you go for please?
    Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I really don't know about the support by the companies or communities, you should check on slatedroid.com (for example) and see what you can find there re. support of these devices.

I never had the Aurora, so I can't "judge" it, but if I had to choose between the Elf and the Vi40, I'd go with the Vi40.

  26. Dear Colonel,

I now tried with Vista, same issue, does not start the flashing.
There must be something I am doing wrong.
When I extract the files from the .rar, should I put them in a defined place or it does not matter?
I believe the correct (?) driver is being installed, something like ***_PID_***
But that does not do anything.
I am ready to try this on XP, but I am afraid I'll get same issues, I am doing something wrong.

    1. I don't think it matters where you extract the rar to, I have everything on an external hard drive, so it shouldn't matter.

Maybe this is a "dumb" idea but have you tried a different USB cable? Maybe there is something wrong with the cable?

So, we are both on W 7.
What you may want to do, which I think I did, is to desinstall the driver that has been installed the first time you launch Livesuit v1. Then you launch the livesuit v2 which then should install the right driver.

  45. 1) First and before all, check in the settings / developer options that the USB debugging mode is set. Whilst you are in the settings, look where (which menu item) you can change the language as after you installed the 4.0.3 everything and I mean EVERYTHING will be in Chinese.
    2) Identify in the Serial Number, at the back of the Tablet, whether you have a v1 or v3, important to decide which image version you need (next step).
    3) Download from the Onda site, the Livesuit (loader and flasher) which contains the img and the drivers. Select the right button depending on the table version (v1 or v3). The image is correct but the drivers and the Livesuit version aren’t (well, they weren’t for me) that’s why we will download another Livesuit in step 6.
    4) Identify where the image file is (.img) and remove the Chinese characters from its name (as the other Livesuit we download in -5- will not upload the file with these characters…..).
    5) Decompress the Livesuit folder you loaded in -4- with a decompression tool such as WINZIP, WINRAR or anything else. If you have a decompression tool, select the Decompress (unzip) here option (right click on the folder).
    6) Now you have the right ICS image on your PC. We now need to download the right Livesuit and drivers, you’ll find them here:
    7) Decompress the Livesuit downloaded in -6-
    8) Launch the Livesuit downloaded in -6- but then select in Livesuit the img (the one you removed the Chinese characters from in its name) you downloaded in -3-

For the following, check also ColonelZap video.
    9) Power off (complete shutdown) your tablet.
    10) Press the Middle button (the menu key)
    11) Connect your tablet to the PC
    12) Whilst pressing the middle button, pres several times the power button of your table. That should trigger the installation of the driver and initiate the flashind. Several windows will pop-up, just continue the process (don’t abort it, answer yes or continue to all).
    13) That’s it. When finished (it goes pretty fast), power on the tablet and select the language (you’ll several chine windows, just answer anything to access the Settings).

  47. Market fix instructions:

    1) Download the Market fix script from here: http://chinamobiles.org/downloads/zap/OndaVi40Marketfix.zip
I would advise you to desinstall the drivers that have been installed (BTW, I am not sure this is needed, try first without desinstalling) and load the right ones from here: http://junefabrics.com/android/download.php
    8) Then restart the script.

  51. As promised, I connected a Bluetooth dongle to the tablet USB port and it worked out of the box.
I could right away use an external bluetooth keyboard & mouse and the beauty is that the 'internal' keyboard (the soft one) is no longer invoked when a external keyboard is connected.
That means you can really create and edit document on the tablet, it is much faster with a physical / external / HW Keyboard and mouse.

    2. The drivers for the flashing tool and the drivers for the market fix are two different things. The market fix requires ADB drivers, the flashing tool uses it's own drivers. To me it looks like you are still having problems with the ADB-drivers.

    1. forget the market fix for a second, just enable USB-Debugging on your tablet and connect it with your pc. On your pc, go to your device manager and check if your tablet is listed as an adb-device. If it is or if it's not, try to update the drivers from these downloads:

      http://colonelzap.blogspot.com/2012/01/allwinner-a10-adb-drivers.html

Of course you need to use the ones that are for your system (32bit or 64bit).

      Delete
    2. Also, make sure to connect it directly to your pc, do not use an USB-hub. You can also try to use a different USB-port on your pc.

      Delete
    3. I think (I might be wrong) the problem is that you tried to run the fullmarket application from within the decompression window / application.
You first need to extract into a folder and then execute the fullmarket that is extracted into that folder.
      Let us know

  88. Hi ColonelZap,

I applied the market fix to my ONDA VI30W Deluxe and it also works on this device beautifully - thank you so much!

The last problem remaining is that the Google Calendar is not synced (as described above by another user (AnonymousFeb 15, 2012 12:03 AM)).
When I try to do the sync the process "com.google.process.gapps" always stops.

I recognized that this problem was already present after installing the new 4.0.3 firmware, so it does not seem to be a problem connected to the market fix script.

Any ideas? Does your syncing work?

    1. For the market fix you need your tablet to be recognized as an ADB-device, for flashing (firmware update) you need the drivers that are included in the LiveSuit flashing software. You can also try this version of LiveSuit, if you haven't already:

  90. Hi,

I have tried to install the market fix for my onda vi40 deluxe, however it says it does not have the internal space.

it would appear that the system/app folder has only 272k of space left (with 251 mb filled)

Any idea how to increase this space, or is the tablet not correct?
