1) First and before all, check in the settings / developer options that the USB debugging mode is set. Whilst you are in the settings, look where (which menu item) you can change the language as after you installed the 4.0.3 everything and I mean EVERYTHING will be in Chinese.
2) Identify in the Serial Number, at the back of the Tablet, whether you have a v1 or v3, important to decide which image version you need (next step).
3) Download from the Onda site (CLICK) the Livesuit (loader and flasher) which contains the img and the drivers. Select the right button depending on the table version (v1 or v3). The image is correct but the drivers and the Livesuit version aren’t (well, they weren’t for me) that’s why we will download another Livesuit in step -6-
Edit: Vi40_V1_Android4.0.3_v0.6.zip
Vi40_V3_Android4.0.3_v0.6.zip
4) Decompress the Livesuit folder you loaded in -3- with a decompression tool such as WINZIP, WINRAR or anything else. If you have a decompression tool, select the Decompress (unzip) here option (right click on the folder).
5) Identify where the image file is (.img) and remove the Chinese characters from its name (as the other Livesuit we download in -6- will not upload the file with these characters…..).
6) Now you have the right ICS image on your PC. We now need to download the right Livesuit and drivers, you’ll find them here: (CLICK)
7) Decompress the Livesuit downloaded in -6-
8) Launch the Livesuit downloaded in -6- but then select in Livesuit the img (the one you removed the Chinese characters from in its name) you downloaded in -3-
For the following, check also ColonelZap video.
10) Press the Middle button (the menu key)
11) Connect your tablet to the PC
12) Whilst pressing the middle button, press several times the power button of your table. That should trigger the installation of the driver and initiate the flashing. Several windows will pop-up, just continue the process (don’t abort it, answer yes or continue to all).
13) That’s it. When finished (it goes pretty fast), power on the tablet and select the language (you’ll get several windows in chinese popping-up, answer anything to be able to access quickly the settings and change the language).
---
Again, credit goes to Francis. Thanks :-)

Thank you so much for this, Francis :-)
ReplyDeleteOne little comment: In Step ONE, USB-Debugging doesn't have to be checked but it won't hurt, either ;-)
Colonel,
ReplyDeleteYou were the one giving all the critical points, instructions and links and you've been helping the whole community, thanks for your work. It would be a real mess without people like you around (like it is for some other chinese tablets).
Would you correct the last sentence into:
you’ll get several windows ion chinese popping-up, answer anything to be able to access quickly the settings and change the language.
Regards
Thanks for the compliment and YOU are helping out A LOT, I really appreciate it :-) I made the changes :-)
ReplyDeleteis the onda vi40e already rooted?
ReplyDeleteNo, not rooted.
ReplyDeleteTo the other vi40 users:
------------------------
Personally I am not satisfied with the VI40 speed. The speed has been greatly improved with 4.0.3 but still not good enough. The vertical scrolling is slow and not smooth (as an example), but there are other speed issues. Wondering if this is because of the Hardware (processor) or because ICS is not 100% tuned for the vI40. I understand that 4.0.3 is beta hence I still have hope. But as it stands, I would not recommend it. Simply.
What other users think? Experience?
Francis
I think it's a combination of the processor (which Onda still claims is suitable up to 1.5GHz?), the (beta) ICS and the launcher. The stock launcher is slow, I recommend to use the Launcher Pro if you want it faster, ob SPB Shell 3D, if you want eye candy ;-)
DeleteYes, but the launcher only plays a role when launching an app, isn't it?
DeleteIn other words, it won't improve the speed within an application (example within a browser).
The sad thing is that I have another and older small chinese tablet running 2.3 which in my view is much faster than the vi40 running ICS. Pictures/screen/text sliding is much faster. At times, the Vi40 even does not react when clicking on a URL link....
Let's see how this evolves,
Regards,
Francis
Of course the choice of launcher won't increase the speed of apps, but it makes a huge difference how fast you can operate the user interface. I also have bunch of smaller tablets that run much faster than the Vi40, I think the screen resolution plays a MAJOR role on the speed. A 800x480 device with the same CPU inside is simply faster.
Deleteupdate firmware to 1.1 its rapid then
DeleteColonel zap... you the man!!!!!! you safe my Vi60.. it works just like you said... press the home button and dont let go and continuously press the power button... it flashed!!!!!
Deleteyahoo.......by the way you know how to flash ramos tablet?
how do you know if your vi40 is version V1 or V3?
ReplyDeleteYou can find either a V1 or V3 in the serial number of your tablet.
DeleteI have had my vi40 for 1 week and last night I let the battery run down to 0% and now it will not power up are do anything. I even tried to hit the rest button nothing. After all of the flashing n adding the android market this happens. Wow n Francis I have experienced the lag in screen movement. Anybody else had this problem with vi40 not powering back up after completely draining the battery?
ReplyDeleteI have. Did you solve your problem?
Deletehy i have the same problem can u help me?
DeleteMe too this sucks!!!!
DeleteTry connecting the tablet via USB cable to a computer. Somehow this worked on my Onda M6 tablet.
Deletecan Onda Vi40 connect the external harddisk ?
ReplyDeleteYes it can. I was away on a holiday and the flat screen in the house didn't support mkv's, so I ran the hard disk (2tb) into the Vi40 via a usb to mini cable, then mini hdmi out, to hdmi into the tv and used the Vi40 as an impromptu media player. Worked like a charm!!
DeleteI am a newbie on this blog, so you'll have to excuse me if I place my question in the wrong place:-)
ReplyDeleteIn the superb video of the Onda Vi40 I have noticed that HEBREW language is included on the list of languages. and I know for a fact that it can read our Hebrew (from left to right) in all websites.
Now since I live and work in Israel, I need a Hebrew keyboard.
Can you please tell me if and how I can get it to work on the Onda Vi40 that I wish to buy directly from China. (on Version 2.3 it is easily downloaded from various applications that are on android market. Like GO Keyboard, Hacker's Keyboard, Smart KB ,and AnySoftKeyboard. My question is very simple: Dose and of those keyboards available for this magnificent Tablet or do I have to wait for the upgraded Android Market? (In which case I'll not buy it for the time being.:-(
Hi :-)
DeleteCheck out this post:
http://colonelzap.blogspot.com/2012/01/onda-vi40-elite-android-40-ics-tablet.html
Also, make sure to read the comments, there is some information about the Hebrew support :-)
Colonel - You are an Angel!!!
DeleteThanks for your super quick (and VERY helpful)reply.
Just so you know: NONE, but NONE of the Chinese sellers could give me an answer to my question!
Thanks again,
Hezi Wein
You're welcome, I'm glad I could help :-)
DeleteHi
ReplyDeleteFrancis says the tablet is not rooted
Do You know how I could do?
Is it necessary for install programs like SPB Shell 3D?
How can I install this launcher if we don´t have access to the Market?
thank you very much
I DOES have root access without having to root it by yourself. You don't need root access to install SPB Shell 3D. If you can't find SPB in the market using the vi40, the best thing to do is to use another Android device, download it, make a backup and then install it on the vi40 from the sd-card.
ReplyDeleteI have tried the Firmware upgrade using both Windows XP and Windows 7 Laptops and LiveSuit ALWAYS stops at 53% with 1 minute 12 seconds left !!! anyone got any suggestions
ReplyDeleteAnd now my Tablet is BRICKED....
DeleteHi,
ReplyDeletejust got my Vi40 today, trying to flash it to 4.0.3, but your link in step 3, which includes the .img file no longer works.
any chance of another link for it? i have been seaching, but to no luck,
keep up the good work though
Shoot, it's down :-( Do you need the V1 or the V3 version? Check your serial number, look for V1 or V3 in it.
Deletei beleive i need v1
ReplyDeleteSorry for the late reply, it took me forever to upload :-(
Deletehttp://chinamobiles.org/downloads/zap/Vi40_V1_Android4.0.3_v0.6.zip
WOW!!, how quick did you sort that,
Deletemany thanks, if there is anything i can do for you let me know.
i'm downloading now
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
ReplyDeleteall worked fine, one point though it didnt want to work at all on a Windows 7 Professional Laptop, but worked fine on a XP laptop
Everytime I try to connect this tablet in USB Deg mode it says it can't locate software for "Android" under device manager it's listed under "other devices, android" when I take it off debug it will allow me to use it as mass storage, but I'm not able to update anything following your instructions. Please Help!
ReplyDeletethe same here, even if I follow the steps like pressing the buttons, etc... please help
Deletehow can i calibrate my battery i try batterycalibratiin but i need to be root... how can do it ?
ReplyDeletesorry for my english :-(
Hello Colonel! I just got my Vi40 V3 and I flashed the 0.6 ROM. After flashed, when I turn off the tablet and turn on again it softreset itself... do u know whats going on?? Thanks for ur help Colonel!
ReplyDeleteHi :-) Are you saying it won't boot anymore? :-( Or what is the problem? What do you mean by a soft reset?
DeleteHey, WOW!! very fast replying!! It boots perfectly but every time boots with a new installation, I mean all my data and programs and stuff is not there anymore.. :( Thanks very much!
DeleteWOW!!! I've never heard anything like that! It installs Android every time you boot it? Sorry, I have no idea what is going on there :-(
DeleteSame thing happen to my Vi40, bought it just few days ago (March 10, 2012)... the salesman flash it with the new firmware for me --- 4.0.3, 1.0baseband... it runs fine, so I went home and start tinkering the device.. my first android :)I installed a lots of apps and also installed a different launcher . Today I decided to install a similar app to setcpu , I rebooted after... then greeted with stock interface with chinese characters, WTF! I proceeded and set the language to English... checked my apps and it was all gone! Curious, I reboot again 3x and greeted with the same fresh install android, WTF ... decided to download the latest firmware and flashed it myself (following ColonelZap's guide) and the problem was gone! my vi40 now runs smooth even with the stock launcher... hth :)
Deleteyeah... actually I touch the reset button, and after that always the same.. gonna flash the previous version and see what happen!
ReplyDeleteHi
ReplyDeleteI wonder what is difference of v1 and v3 models.
Every time I try to connect my vi40 to the computer, it beeps once looking for the driver, and says the driver cannot be found. I am holding down the middle button with the power off, and pressing the power button. How do I direct the device to the drivers in the livesuit folder? I have tried using the device manager to do it but that just tells me it cant find the drivers.
ReplyDeleteNow it wont even turn on. Its been showing me the little android man moving up and down for about 20 minutes
DeleteColonel, first thanks for your efforts. I just got my V1 16GB Onda. I followed the instructions exactly to upgrade to 4.0.3, when I reach holding the Menu button and plugging in USB and hitting power several times, nothing is happening, simply nothing. I am running Windows Home Vista.
ReplyDeleteIf I do same above but hold power it boots, and it seems my computer is not installing the driver properly for the tablet.
Suggestions
Yes, I seem to be having a similar problem as Z. I follow the here instructions, but Windows 7 64 bit fails to load the drivers and the Tablet remains blank. I made sure that I downloaded the 64bit drivers, but when I select the downloaded drivers, they do not load.
ReplyDeleteThanks.
Colonel, I still haven't been able to use the instructions above to update to 4.0.3, plus I am having a new problem. I am constantly getting this message: "Unfortunately, the process android.process.acore has stoppped"
ReplyDeleteAny ideas what could the cuz be or fix?
Using Onda Vi40 V1 4.0.1
Thanks,
Clarification, I am running Vista 32bit, and choose right drivers. When I connect the Tablet and turn it on, I can see the ADB driver.
ReplyDeleteAs you can see in my video above, for flashing your tablet should not turn on at all.
ReplyDeleteNo, am not turning on for flashing. I just hold the Middle button, then plug USB (while holding middle button) and then repeatedly push power button. Nothing happens. Used Frank's Livesuit and selected the image (minus chinese characters).
ReplyDeleteI was just confirming that when I turn it on normally, I can see that my computer is recognizing it as Android ADB interface.
Basically the computer is not budging when I try to flash.
Ideas?
Sounds like you are doing everything right, maybe the timing with the power button pushing isn't right? It can be "tricky", I also sometimes needed several attempts to get it started. You could also try using a different USB port.
DeleteThanks Colonel for quick response. Am gonna vary the speed of pushing the power button and try all three USB ports and let you know.
DeleteTried it all, simply not recognizing it, Livesuit is not moving.
DeleteAnything you might recommend as far as drivers or anything else you might think of?
Are you using the LiveSuit flashing software that is included in the firmware downloads or are you using this one:
Deletehttp://colonelzap.blogspot.com/2012/01/allwinner-a10-livesuit-flashing.html
Can you maybe also try a different USB cable?
I really don't know what the problem is, sorry :-(
Yes, I am using the LiveSuit you specified.
DeleteI just tried another USB cable and with all three ports.
Other than USB debugging needs to be checked is there anything else I need to pay attention to?
Also is there a number of Power On pushes you recommend? Or speed (one a sec or three in one sec...)?
I tried slow, fast, three, 10, 25 :)? seriously, nothing worked.
If anyone has any ideas, I'd very much appreciate them. The 4.0.1 is sloppy and crashes some times. So I was hoping to get the 4.0.3 and then the market added so I can have a good functioning tablet.
Thanks to all your efforts. Great community.
It doesn't matter if you have USB-Debugging checked on your tablet, when you want to flash it, the device is off anyway.
DeleteI THINK the Chinese flash instructions write something about having to press the power button 3 times.
I hope your menu button isn't broken? A little far fetched but I'm running out of ideas :-(
Any chance you could try this whole procedure with a different pc?
Is there a way for me to test the menu button? I can also maybe find a friend and try this process on their computer.
DeleteThanks Colonel!
Colonel! You are the man! And I was wondering how come these new programs don't have menu options. I think I have a slightly defective MENU button, but it works when pushed hard. This usually means it will go after a while :)
DeleteIs that an exception from your experience on the Onda? Is the Menu as smooth as the power button?
ANYWAY...seems I am 4.0.3 now!!!
WOW!!! I do have a serious problem though!
DeleteThe screen is mirrored and the touch is not!
Meaning, that even though the screen is flipped upside down and horizontally, the Touch does not recognize that.
So in my mind am having to imagine the mirror image of what am seeing to touch the right spot!!!
Just in case I do have V1 and downloaded V1.
PLEASE HELP?
First of all congratulations!!! MY menu button works as easily as any other button.
DeleteI once accidentely flashed a V3 on my V1 device, the screen was just like yours, just try the other version, I'm pretty confident it'll work.
Let me know and good luck :-)
I thought maybe the problem was that I let it flash while upside down, so I just flashed again. And this time I held it upright.
DeleteDidn't work. The Onda and Android logos are flipped as soon as I reboot it!!!
Ideas? I am really disappointed now. I waited long to get this and it's useless as it is.
I tried to do factory reset, but doesn't seem I can go to 4.0.1 now.
Is there a way to go back to 4.0.1. Or flip the screen?
Thanks
Keep cool ;) If you flashed the V1, just try the V3 :-)
DeleteLOL...yes I'll pretend am cool...flashing right now........
Delete...waiting...
Let's see....
Android Man Upright!
Onda Upright!
Fantastic!
My Hats Off To The Colonel!!!
It says V1 on my serial # but who cares now. My machine is back!
My sincere appreciation!
FINALLY!!! Congrats!!! On to the market fix, LOL ;-)
DeleteLooks like they mislabeled your device? Who cares, as long as it workes :-)
LOL...EXACTLY! Am working on Market right now. And I think I'll see if I can change to GO Launcher EX or the fancier SPB SHELL. Are these readily available on the market and install as an app or are they something more complicate?
DeleteI don't know if the market will find SPB Shell, but GO Launcher EX or Launcher Pro should not be a problem. Installing is no different than any other app :-)
DeleteColonel! You did it again! Market is working :) one error but then all seems working :)
DeleteI have a question about Skype is it working well with 4.0.3? It would be great to have it here.
I am reluctant to install it, cuz it was causing this constant crash on 4.0.1 "Unfortunately, the process android.process.acore has stopped"
Thank You! Thank You!
You have a wonderful weekend! Am gonna keep playing with my Vi40 :)
Z
Congrats (again) :-) And I have no idea if Skype works, I never tested it.
DeleteHave fun with your "all new" toy and have a good weekend, too :-)
Just some payback to the community:
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, try holding the Menu button firmly, I mean really firm so that you are sure it's engaged before plugging in the USB cable.
Seems that V1 specs on the serial are not always accurate. So there is no harm to just test one of the two (V1 or V3) firmwares (especially in case of inverted screen).
I tried Skype. It works poorly. Voice quality is very good, but camera will show up with red/pink lines on the receiving end using the back camera. Front camera is useless with Skype.
Shout out to our Colonel and Frank for the invaluable support! Your contribution has changed the Vi40 from a scratch pad to a powerful fun tablet.
Salut!
my SN starts with a V1 and in the middle is a V3 so which number represents the Version?
ReplyDeleteShould be the one in the middle, so try the V3. In case it's the wrong one, you can always try the other one.
DeleteI figured out why I could not get the PdaNet to open on my unit to communicate with the pc. when I try to install pdanet or any other downloaded or moved apps via the sd card I get "No applications can perform this action" Also when I try to flash the new market fix the first error message is "not enough space" I think I read that before. thanks in advance for your help.
DeleteWell I tried to reflash the unit with the above methods above. everything set up the live flashing tool, selecting the correct v6 download unzipped, and ready to go. However attaching the unit via usb, holding the middle menu button, and tapping the power button, it falls to recognize the unit and begin the flash. Any ideas or suggestions? I am lost as to why it will not go into the flashing mode, could there be another way?
ReplyDeletethanks.
I really can't say what the problem is but maybe you are having the same problem like "K" (see above)? Maybe you need to press the menu button a little harder? You can also try a different USB Port or a different USB cable, if possible.
DeleteTried it several times and also tried different buttons. I do not know what the middle button is for originally, but if it was for volume it never worked. What about the reset hole will that work or what will that accomplish? thanks
Deletedifferent buttons won't work, it has got to be the menu button. The reset button under the hole is like taking out the battery for a split second, making the tablet re-boot. That's all it does.
Deleteany other suggestions? I tried to use all of the buttons, hard soft, different usb cables, different ports, all no use. I cannot install pdanet or any other apps downloaded as well getting "no application can perform this action" my pc recognizes it as a adb interface but cannot load the script but that will not help if no apps will load the market will be useless. It has to be flashed back i would guess, but what other way to get it into flash mode?
DeleteI am sorry, there is no other way to flash this device :-( Have you tried a factory reset?
DeleteI don't understand what you are doing with PDAnet? PDA net is ONLY for your PC, it's not a software for your tablet. PDAnet is only used to supply the ADB-Drivers that are needed when you want to run the market fix.
pda net was something that was suggested to get the pc and android to tether to install the market fix. It has an app for the android. No I did not try a factory reset and that will be the next step. I just cannot figure out why it will not flash, just like the video everything is set. the correct flashing tool, the correct img file, unit off, install the usb cable while holding the button down, and pressing the power button. Still nothing. I was just mentioning the pdanet because that app along with all I tried to download from either the sd or internet will not install giving me the error message mentioned above. Will the factory reset go back to Chinese and if so can i just reset the language like in the flash.
DeleteSounds like you are doing everything right, I don't know why you can't trigger the flashing software?!?
DeleteAnd yes, a factory reset will put the device back to Chinese, so please remember where in the settings the language is changed.
I deleted all of the files off of the computer and am trying to download them agai, I downloaded the files from the Onda site, however I forgot how I was able to open them. I try to click on them and get he astrozip but it will not open the files. I do not remember how I got to the point to remove the Chinese characters as before. after the download how do I get to the files to remove the characters and the IMG file.
DeleteYou can use software like winrar or 7zip to unpack it. Just google it.
DeleteI am waiting for my Vi40 to arrive. In preparation can you please provide me with some information.
ReplyDelete--Is Flash working properly and what Browser does it work best in?
--I have read that Android 2.3 is far more stable and has more compatible applications. Is there a 2.3 version available for this VI40?
Thanks for all of your hard work.
Thanks :-)
DeleteSo far I haven't found a flash version that works properly and I also have never seen a Gingerbread version for this device.
I would think that Flash is a necessity. Why is Flash so difficult? All other tablets have it running. Maybe I made a mistake.
DeleteColonelZap can you tell me if the V0.6 firware has been ROOTED.
ReplyDeleteNew Firmware V0.8!!!! And it's SMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTH!!!! :D
ReplyDeleteIs it smooth enough to make Francis happy? XD
ReplyDeleteI have to say I did not upgrade my vi40 yet, will do in a couple of days.
DeleteHi Colonel, back again. My Onda screen starting to act up. The touch screen is kind of "skipping" some areas on the tablet. So am moving my finger around and for lil 1 cm spots it skips the touch (i.e. as if I just raised my finger for 1 cm and continued to scroll again).
ReplyDeleteHave you seen anything like this before? Any ideas? Started about two days ago. I suspected that I inserted a 32GB SD card for the first time. Also thought it could be some apps I might have installed. I uninstalled and removed the sd card and rebooted. Did not help.
Ideas?
Thanks
UPDATE: I finally did the factor restore. Still same issue with screen. And upon detailed examination, found that there is a certain band that is about 1cm wide (approx. from top middle and runs down at an angle diagonally till the bottom).
DeleteIf anyone is familiar with such a problem and have ideas for fix, please let me know.
Thanks.
CORRECTION: the band of no response area is actually in the middle of the screen top to bottom. It goes something like this:
Delete----- - -----
----- - -----
----- - -----
----- - -----
----- - -----
The spaces would be areas of no response. I hope this does not mean sensor is broken or can't be fixed.
Colonel, any thoughts?
Different topics: have any of you used Titanium Backup on Onda?
ReplyDeleteSince I don't know how to fix this machine. It seems that factory reset or new flash is one of the often used tools. So this would be handy.
Question 2: anyone know how to copy/paste/move files between internal SD and ext SD cards? I am able to copy a file from internal sd, but when I go to ext SD, I am not able to get the Paste function.
Thanks,
@Z
ReplyDeleteThat looks like a hardware defect to me? I really wouldn't know what to do about it :-(
Do you Launch the Livesuit with the Tablet connected to the PC?
ReplyDeleteMy menu key does nothing when pressed or held down, does this mean
it isn't working?

ReplyDeleteMy Tablet came with full Android Market, will upgrading destroy it & if so can I backup & restore?
ReplyDeleteI'm newbie to android so I may not be that qualified to answer your question, but I can share my experience... I flashed my Vi40 today with the latest firmware (4.0.3, 1.0 baseband) and the Market is included as well as the Flash Player. hth :)
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeletePlease give me a link to the upgrade package you used. I flashed my Tablet & had to re-install the Market, Flash/YouTube still not working.
ReplyDeleteYou mean the latest Firmware?
Deletehttp://colonelzap.blogspot.com/2012/03/onda-vi40-elite-firmware-update-403v-10.html
My fault, I installed Vi40_V3_Android4.0.3_v0.6 from the top of this page. Found Vi40_V3_v0.8 on another page & installed it. Market & Flash are working now, Still have a few Chinese characters in the popup info box at the bottom of the screen.
DeleteThanks for the help! My Android version is 4.0.3 the Baseband version is 0.8 should I update the Firmware?
Does anyone know if Netflix works with the v0.8 upgrade? I get audio, but only a black screen for the video.
ReplyDeleteHi - Just wondering if anyone has successfully put their OndaVi40 into update mode by using adb commands? I'm experienced in Unix but not in the adb command set. I tried simple things like
ReplyDelete#adb reboot update
or
# adb reboot recovery
but so far as I can tell the Onda ignores the command options and just reboots normally. I'd really like to be able to avoid having to try the Menubutton + boot 3 times trick , since it is certainly not easy to get the timing right.
Hi Colonel, hope you are well, can I ask in your opinion the firmware 0.8 is this a big improvement over 0.6 - yet to flash, worried I will lose my android market amongst other things, also does the Onda Vi40 support 3G & possibly 4G in the future or is this not possible with the hardware I have,
ReplyDelete1 more thing is there an english manual for this somewhere, cheers for help again Colonel
regs
paul
Just installed Onda Vi40 Elite Firmware Update 4.0.3_v 1.0, Market & Flash Player are included. YouTube videos play in the default Web Browser but not in Dolphin?
ReplyDeleteThe Menu button trick is not too difficult & quite quick (done it 4 times).
Onda Vi40 supports external 3G, you can run the Chinese manual through Google Translate and/or find an English manual for a similar Tablet, as the instructions are pretty generic.
Upgraded, thanks
ReplyDeleteCan you help me, how I can restore factory settings? My vi40 not open, not unswer and I don't know what can I do with it.
ReplyDeleteI think you can only do a factory reset from the settings when the tablet is booted.
DeleteI can't do it because I see just a first list with android face and nothing more.
DeleteYou can download the ONDA VI40 V3 Android 4.0.3 Firmware Upgrade v1.0 here:
ReplyDeletehttps://www.sugarsync.com/pf/D7547168_1415615_873597
I have both versions on my blog as well:
Deletehttp://colonelzap.blogspot.de/2012/03/onda-vi40-elite-firmware-update-403v-10.html
Has anybody encountered the power on fail? I can't switch it on. Tablet has no response at all. Right before it ran the battery test and seemingly discharged the device. Though after it shut down I had it being charged about 1-1.5 hrs. Still no indication of charging and no responce to power on.
ReplyDeleteNew problem (for me): Something hung my Vi40 so I killed power and rebooted -- not only did it go back to factory settings (Chinese lang, lost all my apps, cleared the SD card), but I can't install my apps. I get the message "no memory available." The internal memory is chock-full, and I can't get the apps to install to the sd card the way they used to. I can't even install a Terminal App to try to delete stuff in the main directory tree. Doing "factory reset" does not help. Every time I shut down & boot, it goes back to Chinese settings. Any ideas what I can do to get my Vi40 back to 'normal' ?
ReplyDeleteI already have the same problem. The solution was to install the previous version (0.8) and then the new version (1.0 i think beta). But now i´m afraid to happen again. I read in some place that is abut related with android market. I hope a new version will come without this bug.
DeleteI am having same problem... have u found a solution????
Deletedoes anyone have problem playing BBC iplayer and 4od, or other similar vod sites? mine got stuck or becomes very slow after 15-30mins.
ReplyDeleteThank you for this very helpful information. I managed to upgrade my Onda vi10 Deluxe using the above methods. Cheers.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing.
Not actually flashing the Onda, but: I used adb to 'pull' the complete filesystem from my Onda to my PC. So far I'm too scaredy-cat to try an "adb push" to load it all back onto the Onda, but if I get a system crash I'm going to give it a shot. If this works it's a lot simpler than re-flashing the upgrade file.
ReplyDeleteHi. My Onda Vi10 deluxe is stuck at android screen. Ca't reset from reset button. Anyone can help?
ReplyDeletewhat is difference between v1 and v3
ReplyDeleteHi all, the G-sensor (Gravity sensor) of my Onda Vi40 does not work.
ReplyDeleteAnyone can help to set it ?
Not working AT ALL? Make sure the screen orientation switch on the side of the tablet is in the right position.
DeleteHi, can you tell me is the external 3G dongle internet connection frequency receiver picks up 3G850 or 900 at all. I would like to use my Onda in countries where wi-fi is not an option and the only frequency is with Claro 850 or Orange 900 and that would be Dominican Republic.
DeleteThanks.
Hi and sorry, I have no idea, I've never used a 3G dongle before.
DeleteBut maybe somedody else can jump in and help?
This is what all tablets including onda say to use Huawei E1750 yet i believe there is a list of around 20,i myself have used a Huawei E353 as i already had it on my onda vi40 elite and worked great
Deleteyou all have probably already thought of this but one can always use 3g wifi tethering through their phone or 3g wifi dongle?! I have however successfully used a Huawei E220 with the tab and also realised I can also tether its 3G through by plugging it to the tab and creating a wifi hotspot. saves me for those expensive wifi charges in the hotel rooms when I need to access internet on various devices!
DeleteAny link to Android 2.3 firmware for Onda vi10 elite ?
ReplyDeletePlease can someone help me. I just bought my Onda Vi40 elite and it has no instructions at all. I have no clue what I need to be doing to get things started. I expected to switch it on and I would have something to look at other than a green android guy. I can't even get past this screen. Please, someone help me out here!

ReplyDeleteWell i discovered that I needed to update my firmware(baseband) from 1.0 to 1.1 Downloaded from the Onda site which I have done with no problems what so ever using the instructions above.for me as soon as I connected to computer it installed the driver (all you need to do is go to devices and printers in your computer and see if your device is listed if yes commence update if not then keep trying to install driver by disconnecting and connecting usb cable and i ran the live suite manually inputting the image and off it went, took about 2mins and was done.restarted tablet and changed language back to English and proceeded to uninstall the crappy Chinese apps that came with it.The big difference for me is it is now much faster and the battery now seems to last forever,i also installed google chrome beta browser and is super fast and never falters its brill a must for you guys. All i want now is a working market fix to bluff google play into believing i am a £600 tablet as that's all they seem interested in supporting, drives me mad that play states my device is not compatible when i get the apk from elsewhere it installs and works fine.so hopefully some kind person will create a market fix as i have tried all that is out there (i think)
ReplyDeleteI have also installed firmware 1.1. Download and instructios are here:http://www.onda-tablet.com/news/how-to-update-onda-vi40-elite/
ReplyDeleteWell, my new firmware did not solve the old problem. After power off and on, the unit came in default factory settings, furthermore system settings/storage/internal storage/total_space showed 0.0GB. So I had to re-flesh the image once more. Now I wonder if the battery goes to zero, will the unit resets itself back to factory settings.
ReplyDeleteHave any of you talked to Onda's technical support people? Do you experience the same problem?
@Skeleton Hi when you say its default factory settings,do you mean its all in Chinese?as that is how it is meant to be it means firmware 1.1 has installed successfully you have to go into settings and reset language to yours then you can navigate etc,Has it got lots of Chinese apps on it now?if so be happy and uninstall not wanted apps.just check in the about tablet setting and see what baseband etc you have if it is 1.1 all is good.it seems like a factory restore but its not as it will not keep any of your old apps settings etc after flashing firmware as its not like an upgrade its like a reinstall but to a better updated android.
ReplyDeleteI hope this helps and is indeed a successful flashing
REF furthermore system settings/storage/internal storage/total_space showed 0.0GB.MINE HAS ALSO SAID THIS SINCE I HAD THE VI40 BUT IF YOU SCROLL DOWN IN THE STORAGE TAB YOU WILL SEE THE COMPLETE MAP,IT DONT MEAN YOU HAVE NO STORAGE ITS A BLIP I THINK.
ReplyDeleteHello, I've read a lot of posts looking for an android 2.2 or 2.3 rom for the onda vi 40. Is there anyway to install one?
ReplyDeleteThank you very much.

Could you please paste a link to the correct firmware that I need to download as i am obviously doing something wrong. If i can uograde firmware straight to 1.2 could you paste that link instead.
ReplyDeleteThanks in advance
What's new in 1.2 firmware and is there a hardware difference between v1.v2 apart from storage capacity thanks
ReplyDeleteHi Colonel, I have an on Onda V3 with a stock baseband v0.9
ReplyDeleteI am trying to upgrade to v1.1 or v1.0.
I followed the hold menu, plug cable, hit power while holding menu instructions and it's not budging.
I have a feeling it's the firmware. I tried to manually uninstall the tablet driver (even if it's showing as ADB device) and forcing system to use your driver, but it windows keeps saying you have latest driver.
How can I force install the appropriate drivers?
Has anyone been successful with upgrading a v0.9 Onda?
Many Thanks.
make sure that the power adaptor IS NOT connected
ReplyDeleteHi Colonel, I have similar problem with flashing/detecting the tablet when turned off. I managed to flash it once to v1.0 after shutting down the tablet, hold down the menu button, plugging in the usb and hit the power button several times, went like clockwork.
ReplyDeleteAfter flashing it was running smooth but my G-sensor wasn't working for games. According to Onda site we have to go Settings> Display > >Accelerometer coordinate system ==>>choose Special coordinate system to support other games. Unfortunately when I tried to hit Display, it prompt 'The Setting has stopped working' and I had to select 'OK' to get out. So I thought I'd flash it to v1.1 now that it's released (v1.2 beta as well) but haven't managed to do it since. Been trying for days, holding the menu button firmly, trying different cables, reinstalled Livesuit, remove usb hosts (including uninstalling hidden devices) from Device manager. It does detect the tablet though, as ADB device when it's turned on. Frustrating. Any ideas? Tablet V3 computer Win Xp.
I just purchased an Onda tablet version 4.0.3. Im unable to download android market or appbrain. Im also unable to download apps from google play. How do I do this? Can I change the chinese applications already downloaded or how do i convert them into english. Please help.
ReplyDeleteRoot the device and install a different version of the OS.
DeleteBought a Vi40 in early June - came with v1.1 installed and all went well until we set a screen password and failed to properly record it. I also had not installed Recovery or set the USB port yo debug, so out turned out my only solution was to re-flash the tablet to v1.1. Many thanks to Colonel Zap and Francis, it all went well, except that I was obliged to run it on XP (Pro, 32bit if that is important) as the USB drivers failed to install on Win7 HP 64bit.
ReplyDeleteNow to deploy what I learned before that silly mistake :-)
Just found out that my Onda Vi40 Elite 16GB has a FAKE 16GB internal storage. True internal storage is only 8GB. Found this the hard way when I kept getting notification that I do not have enough space on my memory for installation of some games from Gameloft when I can see that I have more than sufficient space. Many of my applications started to go missing by themselves and some gets corrupted when I finally decided to do a format and reflash with the official firmware v1.2 OTA. After reflash, I found the truth..... the internal storage is only 8GB. Darn...
ReplyDeleteHi colonel, i have a Vi30 from Onda. will this work on that? thanks for the guide btw.

ReplyDeleteand btw this page is awesome for us new guys!! thx for everythng!
Just wondering what's everyone's verdict on the Vi40. Colonel, whats yours?
ReplyDeleteI have had it for a few months now after flashing it with the most stable RAM that is supposed to be out there however its still got massive speed issues. It tends to freeze singnificantly often as well. If I could I would sell it and pick up a Motorola Xoom (2) or Google Nexus Tab possibly. What according to everone here is the most stable version of Firmware and ICS for the Vi40?
Hi Colonel.. your amazing, I just bought a Vi40 in China, I also read about the android market fix. Do you need to root first and then use the android market fix?
ReplyDeleteI guess this message is totally unparalleled.

Did anyone manage to solve what to do when NOTHING AT ALL happens when pressing the middle button with the power button? My Onda bricked, and I was so happy to find this page, but it doesn't work. Pressing the middle buttone with power button doesn't do a thing. :(
ReplyDeleteThis doesnt seem to be working for me and I am getting very frustrated.
ReplyDeleteI get to the bit where you turn th power off, plug in charger and press menu button with power button a number of times with livesuit is up with the coreect image - however no windows are popping up on my pc to start this. Can you please add more detail in step 9 and onwards please, as the video isnt much help either.
Thanks
@ColonelZap
DeleteHaJo
Ach....letzter Post war übrigens von mir.
