The Phone: CLICK

Just a small video tutorial on how to fix / calibrate the proximity sensor on this phone. I hope it'll help some people.

  1. A year ago i bought a cell phone from star brand. The screen came with a screen problem, i has to go to engineer model too to resolve it (the same way in the video). Now i've resolve the problmem puting Go Launcher (i'm not sure the relation but since i putted the launcher i haven't need to go to calibrate the phone)

I suggest buyers to be AWARE FROM STAR PHONES, the have bad quality controls because other buyers around the WORLD (!) had the same problem as me.

    1. Sorry to hear you had these problem but don't focus on the "brand" STAR it is NOT a brand, that's just a name online stores use for generic devices. I don't believe there is a manufacturer called Star, I believe this name is completely made up ;-)

    2. Oh, thx. I think u r right. Anyway, since that time i prefer buy phones less generic and with certain support, e.g. zopo or others. I bought it in FCT and their customer support was kind but that not change that i've bad luck with a phone with bugs and certainly slow compareted with other (and cheaper by the way) mtk6515 owned for example by my brother. Thanks again.
PD: others can search "star a1000 zero screen calibration" on google and youtube. There are said problem with customers in Canada, USA, Spain, and posts in chinese sellers showing how calibrate the screen to answer to customers.

  2. I have bought this phone and I want to make a full backup of the ROM just in case if something goes wrong while installing some apps but I need to root it first. So my question would be if can be easily rooted (or can be?! and how?). I am afraid I might mess up my phone so if anyone have done this please tell me.

    1. If you have ICS running on it than this should work:

    2. Yes it has installed ICS 4.0.3 with MTK6575 processor. I was thinking if something goes wrong how to boot it and reaper my phone because mostly roms are made strictly for a specific device and I have no idea what hardware/name this device has (except the information from Z-DeviceTest) :). All I need from this phone is working wifi and speed processing and I would like to install Google Now from the new JellyBean so I am calculating the risk of losing my phone permanently :)

Thanks anyway and I will inform you if the rooting was successful on W007 aka Google M100 if I decide to do this.

  3. Hi, Colonel...
Can you review Visture V4 or V10...
Tablet with Dual Core Cortex A9 CPU and Quad core GPU Mali 400...

  4. Just to inform all the users with this phone that the rooting was successful with the method above but the problem is I can't boot into recovery with ROM Manager from android market (shows android with exclamation sign) and I can't install "Google Now". Anyone knows how to fix this issue and anyone has found a cover for this model with apple logo somewhere? :)

  5. Hey guys, I'm thinking of buying this phone, and I'm interested in just how crappy is the photo quality on it? Would someone mind taking a photo and posting it on imageshack or somewhere? It's not a big factor, but I'd just like to know what to expect.

Also, about the overall quality of the phone, can I reasonably expect for it to last two or three years?

    ReplyDelete
  6. The camera is 2MP and the quality of the capturing sucks especially in the dark and the LED flashlight is too weak. The battery is less then average and the WiFi range is also no good. There is no back cover for this model with apple logo nowhere. It is made of plastic and if someone says its metal and has apple logo then he is laying like they did to me. After all the processor is quite good and if you are buying a phone only for a calling and short wifi range then its good option. After all I like my phone but it would be better if there was an apple logo behind and a custom ROMs for full backup from a recovery.

    1. Thanks for your quick response, mate! Yeah, I don't need the wifi range to be much, I'll be using 3G for internet access anyways... About the battery, can it last for two days with 10 minutes of calls per day and a couple dozen text messages?

      Delete
    2. I believe it can hold on for 20 minutes in calls for two days without a problem :).
Sometimes I've charged the battery twice if I have been using 2-3 hours wifi internet connection constantly but for normal usage its an average battery.

  10. In the video, when you cannot back from "Item test" menu, you can use the "vibration key" (just up the volume keys). That key does "back" function in the Factory menu.

  11. Hi ColonelZap,
I've bought this phone but I make a mess (just a little repaired).
Now, after a restore, the phone works well but the external SD it's not used like first.
When I discharge something, external SD is not used, but only the internal 2Gb.
Infact, with FileManager, internal 2Gb is named SDcard and external SDcard2 so, the sistem, store all file in internal space.
I've another W007, fresh and good. How can I make a nandroid from this to the "broken" one? It's possible?
    Thanks in advance.

    1. Make sure that in settings/storage/default write disk you have selected "SD card" instead of "USB storage".

    2. Thank you for your quick replay.
I've already try to set "Store into SD" in Memory Setting but.. no. It doesn't work.
Also the menu it's different from the W007 good.
I think there are 2 different version of firmware or before the hard reset there was charged a version with something different of the one next reset.
      I try. stay tune.
      If you have another suggestion...

      Delete
    3. OH yes. There are two different build.
In the "good" W007 there is:
      ALPS.ICS.MP.V1.11
In the "broken" W007 there is:
      E1809C_V75_JBL_253_20120718
External SD still not used for storing, only internal 2Gb.
I've got firmware to flash it (ALPS....) but I work only with Linux and the unique pc with winXP is a home-ed.

    4. Well done!
I've just now finished to flash my phone to ALPS build and...
all works perfectly. External SD now is recognized as well.

    5. Congratulations and thanks for the feedback :-)

    6. I have built: E1809C_V75_JBL_253_20120807. How can I delete the internal sd return the capacity to internal memory and use the external sd as sd card?

      Delete
    7. how to flash ALPS? 2gb patches for this?

  12. Hi Colonel, new info about this phone.
All the phone using MT6575 has many similitudes.
I've change function of MUTE button with CAMERA and works very well. How?
1-With ROOT EXPLORER go to folder /system/usr/keylayout
    Select MOUNT R/W into R/O.
2-long press (LP) in file mt6575-kpd.kl and open it with TEXT EDITOR.
3-Go to voice "key 113" and replace MUTE to CAMERA.
4-LP back button and make choice SAVE CHANGES (important, because so we create a bak copy of the original file)
5-LP back button and choice EXIT
6-Now, most important, LP on the file mt6575... and choice PERMISSION. Select all r-w-e for all group. Then OK. Return to R/W.
    7-Restart and DONE!

    2. Hey Alex, which program did you use to root the phone? It's about to arrive so I'd like to remove the potential malware and spyware, and maybe other battery-wasting stuff...

Could you give me a link or a list of stuff which can be removed after rooting? Thanks!

    3. Hi Jimmy :-) I'm not Alex but I'll answer anyway ;)

      Rooting should work like this:

  13. There are some other info... if you don't already know.
In some blog I've read that some file are dangerous or potential so.
    Those are:
SmsReg.apk and SmsReg.odex (send sms in night mode, to who?)
    MobileLog.apk, ModemLog.apk and ModemLog.odex (malware)

    Also you can delete:
    PinyinIME.apk and PinyinIME.odex (chinese keyboard)
    and instal swiftkey.

All the file can be removed with ROOT EXPLORER.

    2. I finally received the phone and rooted it without any problems, and I'm very satisfied with it overall! :)

Is there a possibility of installing cyanogenmod on it? I found a really cool and sleek-looking theme, but it apparently only works on cyanogenmod :/

    3. Jimmy - did you had any success putting cyanogenmod on it? let me know at sprmites@gmail.com if you did, much appreciated!

  14. Hi Coronel Zap,

I think I might have bricked my W007. It worked fine this morning, when I had it charging. I disconnected it just now and nothing. Screen doesn't turn on or anything. I disconnected the battery for a while, etc. but nothing. still the screen does not turn on, no vibration, nothing.

Do you know if there is some hard reset method I can try before using it as a paperweight?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi, if you haven't done anything to the phone then I can't imagine you bricked it? To me it sounds more like the battery might be dead?

Sorry, I have no idea :-(

      Delete
    2. It's not the battery. As it just came of the charger where it had been all night. I also tried the second battery which should have a full charge as well.

I suspect it would be some power spike or something... :-(

      So no hard(ware) reset method?

      Delete
    3. I wouldn't know how? Usually you reset an Android phone by booting into the recovery mode but if your phone doesn't boot at all, you can't get into it.

  16. First let me say that I am not a techie person - I do not know much about phones and I am a complete newbie. I recently purchased a Star w007 phone and was very happy with it. It is less than a week old and last night as I turned on the wifi the phone went into reboot, showing the word android across the top and the water effect - that is all it would do - it did not boot up. I have tried removing the battery and restarting but this had no effect. I have started the phone while pressing the volume down button and performed the tests - all tests seemed to be correct except it did not find the sim cards. When I start the phone with the volume UP button I get a picture of a green android lying on his back with the chest panel open, but it has a red triangle with an exclaimation mark. I press the mute button and I get the menu - I have tried "wipe data/factory reset" but it has no effect. Can anyone help?

  17. Welcome :D Can enyone tell me what are the differences between ALPS.ICS.MP.V1.11 and the E1809C_V75_JBL_253_20120718 ?

  18. Root went OK, but while trying a modification to force a CWM install, bad data was mistakenly written to the stock recovery block "mmcblk0p14" . Now phone will not power on and tbere is no response or recognition from the PC. Is there a USB address or another method to force a firmware flash?
    Thank you

  19. 1 more quick question: does the w007 have a FASTBOOT mode? I haven't been able to find a key combination at boot. Thanks again!

  20. Hi all,

I got a rooted W007 and I would like change modem driver according to my geographical area (France).
First, I flash recovery with CWM 5.x
After, I install Rom Manager and backup my ROM.
    But When I explore it, I can't find modem.bin !!

Have you the same problem ?

    Thx,

  21. Hello Colonel,

Thanks for reviewing this phone, your review helped me take the plunge to buy one and I'm glad I did.

I had some problems using the Rooting method you offered for the phone, but instead had quick success with this:
