  1. Thanks for your work. Can you release the version with the soft buttons at the bottom rather than the bar on the right side?

    1. Hi Sebastiaan,

I have downloaded the (-CN + Bottom + Network) ROM. I have the SP Flash Tool V3.1220.01. As noted by ColonelZap I have unchecked ...
      - PRELOADER
      - DSP_BL
      - RECOVERY (Since I have the CWM on my gPhone I5)

      Question:
Do I click on Download (F9) or Firmware -> Upgrade (F8)?

      Thanks in advance.

Thanks to both of you for the ICS, you are indeed resourceful. I'm preparing to download this ICS to my gPhone I5 (experimental). In case I don't like it, can I go back to the iOS look on my gPhone I5? If yes, how do I do it? Thanks in advance.

    4. Hi Sid :-)

The easiest way is, if you have the CWM based recovery image installed, you can make a complete backup of your phone as it is right now. If you want to go back to that point, you can simply restore your backup :-)

      Delete
    5. Hi Colonel,

I did exactly that just before I put the ICS ROM. Thankfully I was thinking along the same lines as you have suggested. Although I see no reason why I would go back to iOS theme it is there nevertheless.

There are three issues that I have found ...
      (1) the initial boot screen is still some Chinese (some 3G provider). I would rather have an Android boot screen. Can you point me in a direction where I can get this as a CWM zip?
      (2) The front facing camera now takes pictures upside-down (With the iOS theme it was correct). Is there some specific settings I have to change?
      (3) I'm still connected to the T-Mobile network not as 3G but as an EDGE (which is really 2G). How do I make this device connect to a 3G network?

      Danke schön!
      Thank you very much!

      --Sid
PS: I downloaded the ROM by Sebastiaan (netxq)

    6. Hi :-)

      1) You can find the boot and shutdown animation in

      system/media

renaming the bootanimation.zip to bootanimation.old (or whatever) should do the trick.

      2) I don't have that camera problem?!?

      3) Also no problem here, make sure you have the correct 3G APN settings from your provider.

      Delete
    7. Hello again ;-),

      1. I was able to access the zip file for both booting & shutdown. However I was not able to rename the file using ES File Explorer. Am I missing something?

      2. The front facing camera is still upside down. Have you tried netxq's ICS ROM? Is it possible there is something wrong with netxq's ICS ROM? Should I install your ICS ROM and the additional fixes instead?

      3. I have verified twice that I have the correct APN settings. Of course this is as per the T-Mobile US document from this site ... http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-1976

      Thanks for your continued help.

    8. Hi Sid :-)

      1) You'll have to give ES File explorer root rights, check the settings.

      2) I haven't tested netxq's rom, so I don't know. Of course you can give "my" vesion a shot.

      3) Very strange. Do you "allow" 3G in the general phone settings?

    9. Thanks for the quick response CZ. I'll have to check to see if my ES File Explorer has root rights (I suspect not). I may have to root my phone again bcoz I forgot to do so before uploading the ICS ROM.

Later this afternoon I'll download your version of the ICS ROM.

As for the 3G I have the exact same settings as noted on the attached jpg file. I'll create a public folder for screenshots later this afternoon and upload all my APN screenshots.

      Thanks again.

    12. Hello CZ,

I tried twice once without clearing cache & without a factory reset, and once clearing cache & performing a factory reset from the CWM recovery menu. I was still unable to get the front facing camera to show the pictures right side up -- it is still upside down. The camera on the back is operating correctly. I'm hoping to find a solution to this. In case you are able to find a solution to this issue please post it here. I have reloaded the other images that netxq posted here because everything is in English as opposed to Chinese.

As for the bootimages & bootsounds, thanks for the tip. I was able to rename it so it bypasses the Chinese image and defaults to Android, of course this was after I rooted the device again.

Thanks and have a great night!

    13. Hi Sid :-)

I really have no idea about your camera problem and why your 3G isn't working?!? Do you know what 3G frequency your provider uses? There might be something you could try, go into the engineer mode by dialing:

      *#*#3646633#*#*

Maybe you can "play" with the settings in the

      RAT Mode

???? But I really don't know if that will do any good :-(

Edit: Check out the status of my phone:

    14. Brilliant CZ,

Thanks for the shortcut to the Engineer Mode (just wonder if there is an App/Shortcut on the device). At any rate, I checked the bands, frequencies, RAT mode and made 3 screenshots for people that are interested ...

From what I gather T-Mobile US is refarming their towers so people with devices that are not on the so called pentaband phones can also enjoy 3G or even 4G speeds. Currently in my area 3G is only available with devices that have both 1700 MHz and 2100 MHz (TMO uses one freq to transmit and the other to receive). Very ingenious I think -- of course it is after all another German Engineering mind. Since I have 1900MHz and eventually TMO is going to refarm all their towers so people on the 1900 band can get 3G. I'll end my blabber here. Once again thanks very much for all that you have been doing.

Just before I finish off. I now know that the flipped image on the screen with the front facing camera is a known issue. I believe AIRi CameraManager (an app) can help fix this inverted image on the screen.

      Best regards and thanks again.

If anyone else has the same preview flipped issue please use this camera app that is brilliant (it lets you flip the screen image, saved image any way you desire). There may be other camera apps that may also provide the same level of functionality.

So far you are the only person I have heard from with this camera problem! I wonder if the somehow changed the hardware components in a production batch and that's the reason for the problem? They sometimes do stuff like that and then some firmware drivers are not compatible anymore.

    19. It appears that there are many versions of Goophone I5 depending on where you purchase the device. I got mine from android-sale.com, and I notice that the link from your blog points to fastcardtech.com. At the time of purchase I wasn't too sure about fastcardtech, so I purchased from android-sale (they seemed more upfront and reliable).

Maybe that explains why you didn't have an issue with the camera while I did. At any rate thanks very much.

    3. Hi :-) Congrats on the GPS :-)

I think it used the "regular" android text to speach engine, I don't know if that is included in whatever firmware you are using?

      Delete
    4. The text to speech engine works sporadically. Even though it says that the engine has stopped I can hear the voice directions in the navigation mode. Overall the GPS is very crappy, compared to my Samsung Galaxy S3. Of course the S3 connects to the network at 4G speeds while my Goophone connects at 2G (on the EDGE) network. I'm hoping the T-Mobile US does the refarming in my area soon so I can get at least 3G speeds. Thanks very much ColonelZap for the countless hours he is putting in to help the Android/Goophone community of users.

    5. Hi Sid :-) Thanks for your kind words :-)

Maybe you should consider using a "real" (offline) navigation software like Co-Pilot, getting data on 2G can't really be much "fun".

    6. Hi Colonel,

Yes indeed as you have rightly pointed out I already have a Garmin navigation. However it doesn't come with feature rich maps like the Google Maps. I wish Google would sell their maps for offline navigation devices like Garmin. Can't really imagine why this is such a constraint, as memory these days is not an issue. Thanks again for all the community service you have been doing.

There is one more thing. No matter which Rom a flash on this goophone (i5 stock iphone alike, android pure ics, mayiandjay, or customs) the auto-rotation feature is not working at all. For example, I cannot watch any youtube video fullscreen on landscape. Is there any tweak to fix this? Or is that suppose to be that way?

Looks like my phone is some kind of non-original goophone because I installed Android Sensor Test to performm all the tests regarding the multiple sensor of the phone and looks like my phone does not have gyroscope, only acelerometer, which is maybe the reason why I cannot rotate my screen. I might just give up trying to do this on my moms laptop and wait till I get mine back from the shop. I just need a step by step from the beginning tutorial. Installing the drivers is frustrating cause I don't know if they are done right, or if I did it wrong.

    only 2 fix
1- battery consumption is very low , except when use 3g.
using 3g go down very quickly. in 5 minut2s the percentage go from 50 to 10. Is it possible to fix this?
2- i'm not able to use gps.

by the way, are you gonig to upgrade to jelly bean?

No, the tweak is permanent, unless you don't do the tweak at all. But then you are back to not having a back button :-( If you like that better, you can also use other virtual buttons like Button Savior (for example).

  47. Hi CZ,

I want to say that due your work and reviews I have ordered the Goophone I5 N2 from FCT as you. I think the work you do is great for all this android community.
Now, talking about the phone ... I was not yet able to take advantage of it, because I pass through a lot of problems to install the Preloader VCOM drivers, CWM in English, new roms etc.
At the end I was able to install the Manuxo´s rom using the Rom Manager, but after doing it I can't use the Volume Buttons and Home button, just the Power button, which means I can't slide to unlock the phone and to power of I need to wait until battery is uncharged.
What can cause this? Have you idea?
I have tried this ICS rom because I can use the Flash tool with the phone powered off as you said but the same happened, everything went ok but I can't use the Volume and Home button and so, not been able to unlock the phone.
If I use the flash tool with the Preloader and DSP selected, can I maybe solve this?
I have searched everywhere but I can't find a solution for it and seems no one have had this issue.
Many thanks and please continue your good work.

    1. Hi :-) That sounds really odd! I don't know this but MAYBE they have changed some hardware components in the production and that's why the firmwares aren't compatible with your phone anymore?

    2. Many Thanks for your answer CZ, I'm still facing the same issues, which is I can't use the buttons in recovery mode and either the touch screen when I try to "slide to unlock". So, I'm stuck here, because I can't enter into the phone to enable the USB debugging.
Do you know a away to wipe the data, besides in the recovery mode?
I just can use the Flashtool to interact in some way with the phone. Can I use the format option in the FT to erase the data and then Flash it again?
      Many Thanks once again.

  70. Hi :-) I have no idea why you are having this problem?!? I have the pure Android on my phone and it is charging just fine, no matter if the phone is on or off. Maybe you should try a different charger?

  73. Hi everybody! Last two days I'm facing the problem with Goophone. Battery is within 6-7 hours totally dead. I'm using it with 3G on, rest is off (wifi, gps,bt). I can make max. 3 calls, send 1 sms, little bit chat with Whapsapp. After that, I have to wait 1-2 hours to plug Goophone into charger. It is extremly hot. I have silicon case on it, when I remove it, it is better, but then I don't have any protection of my phone. Then it is starts to charge normally and I can use it again. Any ideas, solutions, please?

  74. Greetings Colonel Zap!

I know this is kind of an old smartphone already, but I was wondering, is there any Jelly Bean 4.2.2 Custom ROM compatible for this Goophone i5?
